Chapter Eight

“Thanks for dinner,” Aura said. “It was really interesting.” She looked up at Marley who leaned against her door looking the picture of the sexy butch.

“I had a nice time too,” Marley said. “I’d like to see you again.”

Aura had hoped she would ask. At the same time, she had prayed she wouldn’t because she thought she kind of liked her.

Marley made her feel, made her want something more. At times she was so lonely it hurt, but Aura was almost afraid to take a chance on having something more in spite of being tired of being alone.

“I won’t push.” Marley pushed away from the door and reached out to stroke the side of Aura’s neck. Marley’s fingers were soft on her skin, making her body react in a heated rush. “I can wait.”

“I want to.”

“We can do something very informal like lunch or breakfast,” Marley suggested.

“Breakfast sounds nice.” It was a good place to take a step further away from her fear even if Marley only ended up being a just a friend.

“Tomorrow? Name the place.”

“There is a place called the Breakfast Bar. It only serves breakfast. How is seven?”

“I’ll see you there,” Marley said and leaned toward her.

Aura rested a hand on Marley’s waist as she tipped her head up a little more.

Marley’s lips were soft as they met hers. The kiss was an unhurried meeting of lips as her eyes slid closed. The kiss was sweet and gentle, and some of Aura’s barriers crumbled.

Marley arrived home to find Alla, her lady in waiting while she was here in the kitchen making tea.

“Duchess,” the other woman said. “Would you like a cup of tea?”

Marley smiled. The girl was a child next to her at only thirty-five. Though Marley had known Alla since her birth Alla had not yet learned to read her as Alla’s aunt Bagda had.

She moved to the table. “No, thanks.”

“How was your date?”

“It was good,” she said with a grin. “She’s skittish, but she’s open to me.”

“Sounds good. The others are setting settled,” Alla told her.

“I need some homey touches added to this place,” she said. “Get things you like. In a few days, I’ll have a schedule for you to manage.”

“Yes, ma’am.” The other woman who sat at the table in the eat-in kitchen gave her a nod.

“I’ll leave some money for you to manage the household.” They had gold and silver. She’d been sent here with a hefty sum and had opened an account and gotten the necessary bank cards.

She was amazed that they were just like money. In Demora, you paid with gold or some coin or you bartered for goods.

“Are you going to contact any of your old friends about a job?”

“I already have.” She enjoyed working for Aura, but it wasn’t ideal especially since Aura had no idea she was a demon yet.

“I don’t think you should take too long in telling her,” Alla said.

“I know, but I don’t want to rush her, Alla. It’s important that she gets to know me first.
